Windoows Explorer searching for something?

My wife's computer runs Windows 8.1 (with Start 8). Yesterday, when
she right-clicked on the start orb and selected Windows Explorer (the
wording might be a bit different, I don't exactly remember), something
odd happened.

Explorer appeared, and the green progress bar across the top started
reaching across the window...and kept trying to get to the end and
kept trying....

It was apparently looking for something, but ???

All programs, open/save dialogs, etc work normally. And if we aim
Windows Explorer at C: or I: or someplace, it works. It has trouble
when it's aimed at "This PC", the top-level entity.

Any ideas?

The most common occurrence when seeing the green bar progress from the
left to right in File Explorer in 8x/ and 10 (Windows Explorer in 7) is
Windows progress through the C:\ drives folder/subfolder tree
establishing access permissions for the respective folders.

If there are other devices on the same network the progress bar can be
seem more often when making a network connection to other devices wiith
shared folders on the network.
