my fear about win 8.1

My fear is that now that win 10 is microsoft's darling favorite child,
that MS will by lazy with security updates for win 8.1

I upgraded to 10, but it totally screwed up my MaxxAudio sound

I had to revert back to 8.1 and frankly, I don't need Edge, that siri
copycat or the new sound effects from 10

You can always pack up and live with the Taliban in caves where
computers aren't needed but security wise, you have fellow Taliban
fighters to protect you.

I don't think that's a rational fear. They don't want security problems
with any of their supported products, and the fix for any particular
issue will be similar across all products. It's not that much more work
to patch all of them than it is to patch one.

I wouldn't expect much more in the way of feature improvements for 8.1,
though.

I believe there is enough similarities in the basic systems of Windows
8/8.1 that any problem in Windows 10 would be a problem in Windows
8/8.1. I think you are looking for problems where there are none.

I don't know anything about MaxxAudio, but I do know that I have banged
on in the Windows 10 insider forum and feedback about an Edirol device
that didn't work in 10, but was fine in 8.1.

A person who didn't identify whether he was from Edirol (ie Roland) came
on and suggested alterations to a text file in the driver package. This
made it work, and I see that now Roland's site says "Under Testing" for
the W10 drivers.

My plan is to keep testing and report problems with Windows 10, and hope
others do the same. When it feels stable, I'll decide whether to move to
it. Meanwhile I'll keep on using W7, Linux Mint and XP as my main OS's
and I'm relaxed about the support situation.

I think you have tried to jump too soon, but I can understand the desire
to get shot of 8.1

Updates and patches are provided for the lifecyle of the product in two
forms.
- Program and security updates during the mainstream phase of support
- Security updates and only necessary program updates during the
extended support phase

8.1 at this time requires it to the be latest version of 8.1 (i.e. 8.1
Update). What is possible is a later version of 8.1 could be pushed
(e.g. 8.1 Update 2 and that would be the new baseline to receive program
and/or security updates until the end of the product lifecycle)
