windows activation technologies??
 

Running legal version of windows 7 home premium. Have had a long time (more
than a year) problem with windows update. A few months ago I was able to
get it working for a short period of time by following directions here

Then after a month or so working properly quit working again. Now
another problem started a few days ago windows activation technologies
popup telling me "this computer is not running genuine windows" I have
scanned with Malwarebytes and also with Avast free Antivirus and found
nothing. I tried system restore but it does not work. I checked system
"view basic information about your computer" and it shows windows is
activated with product ID number. I would like to know how to fix these
problems or if they are related. If I have to reinstall windows is there a
easy way to do all the updates? Any advice appreciated.

Not to pick at the details, but I don't see any
"proof" you sourced a legal copy.

If you buy stuff off Ebay, you could get just about anything.
If you buy off Craigslist, how many machines is that software
already installed on :-) And so on.

By not stating where it came from, I can't guess at the
pedigree, or give you any warnings about what can happen.

If you buy from Newegg or Amazon (and it's not a third-party
seller, it came direct from them), then there's a chance the
thing is legit.

Holograms are no protection. Counterfeiters can reproduce
any materials needed. Just as with money, anti-counterfeiting
features only slow them down, and don't stop the activity.

A claim of "not genuine windows", it might not actually
be a genuine windows. It could be a VLK, you got it installed
at the shop, the dude at the shop winked at you and said
"don't try and reinstall that yourself, OK". You got a good
deal on it. Etc. There are plenty of hints, that something
is not right with the transaction.

There isn't really a way to "vet" keys, because if Microsoft
had a "key testing site", the monkeys would make random
keys and test them "until they got a good one". You can see
that offering such a site, would encourage abuse.

However, doing an actual install, gives an opportunity to test.
You could back up your existing installation, do a fresh install,
and see if the key works.

If you've been ripped off, there's always DAZ Loader.

Microsoft Support (phone service) should be able to help
with activation/genuine issues. They have a tool called
"mgadiag" which you can see mentioned in forums. It provides
them with some information on activation.

It's true, that occasionally something tips over in the OS,
to invalidate the installation. But it's just as likely,
that if you told us your "purchase story", we could
tell you the relative risk level you were running.
Like that copy you got off Craigslist = frisbee.
Or how that mom&pop store that installed Windows for
$50, gave you a VLK and "winked" at you.

Are you in the camp that believes Windows Update
should always be running and is critical to security?
If so then read no further.

I take the approach of always blocking anything
that wants to call home or perform unsupervised
updates. I install SP1 and awhile back there was
a "rollup" that's similar to SP2. Those two would
get you the majority of updates without having to
leave your system on a destabilizing dripfeed.

My computer is 5 years old and was purchased at costco.com there is zero
chance the operating system is counterfeit. I reinstalled windows 7 two
years ago when my hard drive went out. I noticed this morning that the
windows activation message popped up after I opened chrome browser. I am
going to restart and try a different browser.

Rather than use the Windows update facility, you might want to use
WSUS instead. Download it, let it create the updates folder for you,
run the updater from inside that folder. It can clear up alot of
issues with the update process before you even notice one was present
and/or going to be a problem down the road for you.
