CD-ROM & Yellow Exclamation Point!
I installed a CD-ROM drive into a friend's machine - Celeron 400 with 160MB
ram & two 4GB hard drives. (Makes me want to cry too.) It is running Windows XP Home and has all the latest MS updates. Sometime between the time I installed it, last summer and now, the CD-ROM drive stopped working and I see the Yellow Exclamation mark in the Device Manager. The only solution I have read here that works seems to be a restore and I do not know if that will work in this case since I do not know when the problem occurred. I did try to uninstall the device and the let the operating system find the new hardware, but that did not solve anything. From what I have been reading here a lot of people seem to have this problem after the SP2 upgrade. Could it be that my friend's system is just too dated to run Windows XP Home? Ak |

Neither installing SP2 or using older hardware caused your problem.
Read the following: CD-ROM Access Is Missing and Messages Cite Error Code 31, *Code 32, Code 19, or Code 39 After You Remove Easy CD Creator in Wi*ndows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;314060 To resolve this behavior, follow these steps: 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). [Start Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter] 2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK. 4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK. 6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance. 7. Restart your computer. -- Carey Frisch Microsoft MVP Windows XP - Shell/User Microsoft Newsgroups Be Smart! The registry did not have an UpperFilters value but I did delete the LowerFilters value and after the restart, the CD-ROM drive was back. Ak |
