Doc January 5th 12 10:49 PM

What setting to move a file/folder and delete at the same time -without having to cut/paste?

I want to be able to drag a file or folder from one folder or drive to
another and have it disappear from the source at the same time - i.e.
without having to do cut/paste. Where do I set that?

Thanks

If you right-click and hold, then drag it where you want, when you release the right button, you'll be offered the
choice of Move or Copy.

Either [right-click-and-drag] the object from one folder to another to get
a short menu on releasing the mouse button, that asks if you want to :

Move to here
Copy to here
Create a shortcut here
Cancel

....or, while you "drag and drop" (with normal left-click-and-hold) Also
press and hold the following key while dragging and dropping for the
following results :

Hold While Dragging :

[Ctrl] = To COPY source
[Alt] = To create SHORTCUT of source
[Shift] = To MOVE source

But there is no setting to control the default behaviour, which differs
with types of file / attributes and file permissions / different media...

Thanks to you and all others. Apparently what I was observing where it
does this automatically is when I was dragging from one location on
the same drive to another, when doing that it deletes the file from
the old location. Doesn't do this when dragging across drives.

That's normal.

As others have said, you can override that behavior by using the right
click menu. (See above.)

I always use the right click menu, since I have a hard time
remembering what happens when you left-click--when it copies and when
it moves.

Ken, never have to struggle to remember again ("what happens when you
left-click") if you can remember this! :-

[Ctrl] = To COPY source (remember : Ctrl or [C]trl as in [C]opy)
[Shift] = To MOVE source (remember : Because you are [Shift]-ing the
target)
[Alt] = To create SHORTCUT of source (remember : Alt as in a Windows
Shortcut is the [Alt]ernative to the Copy and Move operations...

Thanks, but trying to remember isn't necessary for me. I always just
right-drag and get to choose from the menu.
