Yes, they are skipping "9", probably because they consider the number to be unlucky. In actuality what is unlucky is their choice of leadership. The current dweeb isn't much better than the previous lunatic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvsboPUjrGc -- Web based forums are like subscribing to 10 different newspapers and having to visit 10 different news stands to pickup each one. Email list-server groups and USENET are like having all of those newspapers delivered to your door every morning. |

Was this just a typo? http://www.infoworld.com/article/268...ows/microsoft- windows-165000-first-look-windows-10.html Nope. Not a typo. Marketing. To sell you another bottle of snake oil to make up for all those bottles that didn't sell. The PR hype for 10 reads very much like the Vista release of years ago. New name to reflect a totally new "from the ground up" OS. Right. Microsoft has never done anything from the "ground up." It costs too much. Takes too long. Easier, quicker to cut and paste. Microsoft is a copycat, not an innovator. (And at worse, thieves.) They see what's selling, and jump on the band wagon, but are always a couple years late and a dollar short. Since 8 was the New Vista, hopefully, 10 will be the new 7, but I doubt it. Stef |

I have a bad habit of doing a mass erase before I do a new post so I can tell who is responding to my thread. Occasionally, it back fires |

I would not think M$'s marketing Weasels would let that one pass. They are well aware of when Chevrolet made the mistake of marketing their "Nova" in Mexico, where "Nova" is short for "No Go". Couldn't sell a single car. Chuckle! Three points: 1. It's not that "Nova" is short for anything. In Spanish "no va" means "it doesn't go." 2. The story is not about Mexico in particular. It's about all Spanish-speaking countries. 3. Although it's a good story, it's false. It's a well-known urban legend. See http://www.snopes.com/business/misxlate/nova.asp |

Chuckle! -T Urban myth...don't believe everything you heard From NPR qp Finally, in our discussion with John Colapinto last week about brand names, we bought pointed to the Chevy Nova as an example of poor branding, repeating the alleged problem in Spanish. Nova means no go. Well, after a flurry of tweets, we check the website snopes.com, and we apologize to the Chevy Nova, and all its former and current owners. The story is an urban legend. In Spanish, nova means the same as it does in English. You need to insert a space to get to no va, and evidently people didn't. Remember "Rape Seed" oil? It is now called "Canola oil". Hmmmmmm. A perception problem? Not in Real English it isn't. Here in UKland we still have rape, the plant, rape seed, the seed thereof and rape seed oil, even in shops. We also have tons of people using anti-histamines because of that bloody plant. Me among them. And "Canola" is one sub-species, or cultivar, of commercial rape. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canola (and note especially the last sentence), which states Etymology The name "canola" was chosen by the board of the Rapeseed Association of Canada in the 1970s. The "Can" part stands for Canada and "ola" refers to oil.[5][6] However, a number of sources, including dictionaries, continue to claim it stands for "Can(ada)+o(il)+l(ow)+a(cid). These dictionaries include the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language and Random House Kernerman Webster's College Dictionary.[7] The name was coined partially to avoid the negative connotations of rape.[8] |

Around here, no one has ever heard of rape seed oil. Can you imagine the look on the marking firms face when the rape seed growers presented them with the problem? (They deserve a medal in marketing history!) I use Turmeric for my allergies (great for the heart too) and Butterbur The alfalfa fields around here drive a lot of people crazy all summer long. The tumbleweed knocks me sideways. -T |
