can't play dvd with windows media player 11

Hello, I can't play dvd's on my laptop running windows xp pro sp3 with
windows media player 11. when I try to play the dvd it tells me that i
do not have the proper codec. So I installed PowerDVD 7.0. Now I can
play my dvds with PowerDVD 7.0 just fine but not in wmp. Every time I
insert a dvd the PowerDVD program immediately opens. How can I play dvds
with WMP?

my friends laptop running xp pro sp3 i just pop in the dvd and a menu
comes up asking if I want to play with windows media player, power dvd,
real player, quick time etc. so I choose wmp and the dvd plays just
fine.

Please help me be able to play dvds on windows media player...

Double-click "My Computer"
RIGHT click the drive that you use to play DVD's
From the sub-menu, Select "Properties" for that drive.
In the following dialog select the "AutoPlay" tab.
Then In the drop down for content type select "DVD movie"
Then under "Actions" you have your options:

On your friends laptop he will have selected:
"Prompt me each time to chose an action"
If you want the same, then select and click "Apply" button.

If you want so as WMP always plays DVD's by default,
Select: "Select an action to perform"
Scroll down and click to highlight "Play DVD using WMP"
Then click the apply button
close all windows and load a DVD and test it.

Hello, I appreciate your reply.

I have followed the steps that you mentioned and I was able to select
"Prompt me each time to chose an action" for DVD.

Now when I insert the dvd movie I get the pop up prompt to select which
player I would like to use (WMP or PowerDVD.

However, when I select “WMP” the “WMP” program opens briefly and then
closes and PowerDVD opens and begins to play the movie.

I don’t understand why my laptop is doing this as I have checked the
settings on my friends laptop and we can select either WMP or PowerDVD
and the DVD plays properly in both players.

Several ideas...good luck.

Have you opened WMP 11 and gone to...
Tools / Options / File Types / Select All / Apply / OK.

FWIW...it's always best to create a System Restore
point before installing software or updating your system:

Plug-ins for Windows Media Player

You could have an issue with your video driver...if
you reduce the Graphics Hardware Acceleration as
per the instructions in the following article...you may
see an improvement. If...yes...you need to update
your video driver. (improvement or not...be sure to
return the acceleration to full after the experiment)

If all else fails...it may be worth a try to install the following
Codec Package:

CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)

Try this:
GoTo: StartSettingsControl PanelAdd or Remove Programs
Then Select: "Set Program Access and Defaults"
Select: "Custom"
Scroll to locate "Chose a Default Media player"
Select for all listed: "Enable access to this program"
