XP update malicious software?
 

Windows update continues to work for XP, with a
new malicious software update each month.

Just this month it started sending data back to
microsoft. Anyway Zone Alarm asks for permission
and it won't complete the update without it.

Perhaps a record of what the previous month's has
found?

On XP, Windows update will work for Microsoft components other than the
operating system itself. So it's normal that updates for MSE will keep
coming. I'm sure they will as well for Media Player and Office etc.

On XP, Windows update will work for Microsoft components other than the
operating system itself. So it's normal that updates for MSE will keep
coming. I'm sure they will as well for Media Player and Office etc.

philo, I'm going to install XP on this machine that has Win2000. Any advice on how to set it up so that I can boot to a menu and choose one or the other?

If the machine has one hard drive and it's all one partition you will
need to get 3rd party software to repartition your drive.

You will need to shrink the Win2000 partition first.

Once you do that there will be "free space" on the drive.


Now all you have to do is boot with your XP cd and be sure to take the
option to use the free space for your installation.


BTW, unless your machine has at least a 1ghz cpu and 512 megs of RAM
don't even bother to try XP

Thanks, I have plenty of GB and CPU speed. After I install XP like this, and then turn the computer and reboot, will it come up to a menu where I can choose 2000 or XP? Will probably re-installed 98 also because I have a version of Autocad that runs on 98 but not on 2000 and later.

You may be able to run that old AutoCAD app under WinXP in compatibility
mode. I have an old app (VisioPro v5.0) that runs in Win98 compat.mode
under XP; works fine.

When you install XP on the 2nd partition it will automatically be set up
for dual boot, so you won't have to worry about that.


However, with Windows you generally need to start with the oldest
operating first and it will be rather tricky to add Win98 later, you
will need still one more empty partition and a 3rd party boot manager or
else be prepared to repair your boot sector

If . as suggested, the compatibility setting do not work, then I'd
install Win98 in a Virtual Machine
