You go to install something, and it doesn't work.

You go to the Inteernet and follow all the advice you can find, and it
still doesn't work.

I've just tried to set up Cortana and the damned thing seems to be
deaf and dumb.

1. I have set up the microphone
2. I have disabled the microphone's so called 'enhancements'.
3. I have adjusted the microphone's levels (now at 100%).
4. I have updated the microphone's driver.
5. I have tested the microphone with Sound Recorder and it
works.
5. I have rebooted the machine just in case.

But whether by typing or microphone Cortana still remains deaf and
dumb while task manager tells me it is contemplating it's navel at
great length. I would be greatful for any polite suggestions as to
what to do next.

Or might be dead. It is a living being after all and can speak very
well. Children in the UK are advised to listen and learn from Cortana
or Alexa!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember, your desktop is a "SmartPhone".

Cortana needs "microphone permissions". Check Settings.

"touch" the webcam.

And it's annoying when you suspect something has
one of those permission problems, but you can't be
sure whether there is a permission hiding some where
blocking it or not.

And don't ask me how the permission model varies with
win32 programs versus "Apps", as I don't know the answer.
You might see some permission entry which makes an
oblique reference to win32, but you really can't be sure
whether that covers what you're doing or not. This
"sea of sliders" concept is so stupid.

Now, a design I like when running the computer, is
the "onion skin" approach. I try to run a gnuwin32 program.
A dialog pops up "you need blarg.dll to do this".
You copy blarg.dll into the folder. "You need arglebargle.dll".
You copy that in. Eventually, the application runs and
there's a big smile on your face. Why can't the "steeplechase
manifest" for these stupid Apps, guide you somehow ? "Oh,
you'll need the microphone and flush toilet permissions
to run this" said Cortana.

A problem is that the various things required (and not just for
Cortana) are arranged like ivy on a wall. You think you have set up a
path from beginning to end but over to one side on another tangled
branch is something you have to turn on or off or set in a particular
way ...

I looked at the original poster's reply, so this is hindsight,
but... I think originally he said text input is not working either.

The dates on some of the articles claim to be relatively
recent, but the approaches in some of these suggest the
article is actually a couple years old. I looked in
Troubleshooters but can't see anything relevant now,
no cortana, no start, no search troubleshooter.

And one of my installs has lost the Windows Store... again.
You'd think of all the stuff to keep losing, they
would manage to keep the Windows Store on my taskbar :-/
I have other installs where the Windows Store is still there.

Of all of my Win10 VMs, none has an icon for the Windows Store because
it's one of the very first things I delete when I spin up a new VM.

Of all of my Win10 VMs, none has an icon for the Windows Store because
it's one of the very first things I delete when I spin up a new VM.

VM and real machines here. My wife and I can type quite fast, 40-60
wpm, and I don't mind asking duckduckgo or google etc.

I nhave got into device manager and have found that it cycles between
the normal display and a blank screen at about half second intervals.
In any case it is unusable. This may or may not have anything to do
with my Cortana problem but any suggestions about what the damned
thing is doing?

10 minutes later: I have rebooted and all appears to be working
properly again (except Cortana). :-(

I've got one looping like that right now, and rebooting
isn't helping.

I managed to get Task Manager to run.

From there, I got explorer.exe to start.

Plugged in a DVD and now I can run "setup.exe" off it.

*Don't* accept the option to download updates.
It got to 46% and stalled. Now, I have to repeat
and try again.
