Installing basic graphics driver

The ATI All-in-Wonder 9600 XT graphics card
on my 4-year old Targa computer
with Asus K8V-F VIA K8T800 mainboard
seems to be having problems -
when I boot the system it re-boots 9 times out of 10
as soon as it reaches the graphics stage.
[I have tried re-installing the latest driver from ATI.]

Can I install a basic VESA (or other) driver?
If so, how precisely should I go about it?

I am not a frequent Windows user, as may be obvious.
Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

Try opening the side of your computer and remove the screw that holds
your video card to the case. Pull the video card out but not all the way
and then put it back in again. Do this four times. Make sure you pull
the plug to your computer before doing this. I am assuming you have a
desk top.
