widows live messenger/msn vs windows messenger
 

everyone is all hype and into MSN/WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER. Now remember i am a
newbie/novice at this so - i use remote assistant often, which is available
tru windows messenger but not available tru msn/windows live or is it?
anybody out there that can help on this?

Windows Live Messenger supports Remote Assistance, it's in the "Activities" menu. Although
Remote Assistance will only work in Windows Live Messenger if Windows Messenger is also
installed.

What exactly do you need help on?

HI James,

It's exactly the same, except you initiate it from the Activites toolbar icon in Windows Live
Messenger.

And yes, you can run both at the same time, but they'd have to be logged into separate
accounts.

While you are on the subject, Being a MSN Email subscriber, Is one still
required to have MSN Explorer and MSN Messenger? I thought that Windows
Messenger was an auxiliary (whatever I mean by that I don't know!) program
that was not required to run in order to have MSN Mail. My MSN Messenger has
been acting strange (I think because of some Google toolbar download that now
is trying to take over the online log-in process .. yes obviously I am
dial-up.) Which brings me around to another question. Since I am going to
call Verizon and get DSL .. should I just go about downloading and installing
MSN Live Messenger because I will be using that still? Will that upgrade be
required of MSN Messenger I guess is what I am asking. I have already
downloaded it as a separate file.

MESSENGER and will try to use the Remote Assistance serice soon, hopefullt i
suc eed. Also now i understand what you mean by sign in on a different

Greetings,

The different MSN Explorer's have integration with Messenger, and some versions will even
re-download and install Messenger silently if you remove it. However, with all the latest
updates, the integration has been broken somewhat but I'm afraid I don't have access anymore
to see exactly how much you can separate them now.

There shouldn't be any need to upgrade your Messenger client unless you're being prompted to
do so and can't sign in otherwise. However, the latest version does have a number of
benefits, so it's worth at least trying out if you want. You can always downgrade later if
you don't like it. It's up to you.

This is first time using this discussion function so please treat me gently!
I used msn messenger until recently uploading windows live messenger. I have
never understood the difference between the two. Now I have live messenger
8.0 and having problems in not being visible to some contacts when I am
online and not able to see them either, however I am available to others and
can also see them. I was not being blocked by affected party as I received
email saying they could not see me online. Tonight during conversation I was
notified contact had gone offline but convo continued and then notified they
came back online. They also received notification i had gone offline but
convo still continued. Can you help me with this problem please as it is
causing me a great deal of concern. Many thanks

Windows Live Messenger -is- MSN Messenger, the marketing department just decided to rename
it. There is a product called Windows Messenger, but you don't appear to be using that, so
don't worry about it.

From what you're describing, you may be seeing a bug in Messenger. To try to correct this,
shut down Messenger entirely by right-clicking on its icon in the notification area (by the
clock) and choosing Exit. Then download and run this .reg file:

Then try signing in again. It make take 30-40 seconds after signing in before they appear
online.

I followed your instructions and ran the .reg file. When you said that it
might take 30-40 seconds after signing in before they appear I assume you
were talking about the contacts I was having problems with. They are not
on-line at moment but hopefully this will fix problem. Will check when them
come on-line and if any further problems will contact you again. Many thanks
for your help - and also for clarifying the change of name - Marketing
Departments DO love doing that from time to time lol. Thanks again and
hopefully I will not need to contact you again :-)))
