However, it looks like Microsoft hasn't completely forgotten about its
previous Windows versions, so this week, the company decided to roll out
new ISO images for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

You probably didn't see this coming, especially because the software
giant is hard at work to get Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018
Update) ready for all devices across the world, but users who want to
clean-install any of the two OS releases mentioned above can now get the
official images from Microsoft.

Previously, Microsoft was offering Windows ISOs via Digital River
downloads, but the company then decided to pull them completely without
providing a different ISO download method.

Product keys required

The software giant decided to stick with Windows 10 since its launch, so
even if it continued to support both Windows 7 and 8.1, no official ISO
images were offered to users. The Microsoft download page now lets you
choose the version of Windows 10 that you want to download the images for.

Does anyone know what the Win 7 ISO includes? SP-1 or perhaps ALL updates

The last time I downloaded 64-bit W7 HPE ISO had SP1, but that was a
couple years ago.

Sure we know but what has this got to do with Windows 10? Can you
explain this to us because we don't know this.

So what has changed since then? Since when did Microsoft started
packing updates with its iso file? Can you explain this to us. When you
reply please also tell us why are you so stupid to post Windows 7
questions on Windows 10 newsgroup.

I am reading this in alt.windows7.general so who is stupid?

I have SP-1 but it sure would be nice to have an ISO with ALL updates
included so an "in place" install could be done without having to go thru
100's of updates afterwards.

When I *bought* a copy of Windows 7 Pro for the new machine,
the ISO already had SP1 boiled into it. You check the System
control panel, and it says right in it "SP1".

What they typically don't do, is install 100-150 security
updates in the image. They don't try to patch the image
up to an arbitrary date.

Someone downloading this item, could check and see how
many patches show up in Windows Update, and they could
also check whether Windows Update comes back in 3-5 minutes
after clicking "check for updates". Just to see if anything
post-SP1 has been injected to improve the user experience
after installation.

There have been two versions of the SP1 patch-level ISO,
and the second one had some sort of "installer" improvements.
The image itself hadn't been changed, but something about
how it installed got a minor fix.

Someone who is interested, can download and check for us
whether this media is different in any way.

Since the availability of the download is just as crappy
as it was six months ago, I don't see a reason to get
too excited about this media. A typical user would
need to use Heidoc to get it, and Heidoc got "burned"
on its current Win7 delivery method, so don't expect
them to care quite as much about delivery.

People who bought Retail Win7, already have media,
and they would be the only people qualifying for this.
A Dell or HP user cannot download the media, for as long
as the license key check on the web page, only
allows Retail keys. OEM keys don't work (I tried that
with the Acer laptop key a couple years ago).

Windows 7 is not supported any more. It is on what Microsoft call
Extended support. This means you only get security updates but users
have to download them manually. they are never packed with any last
release of the software. The last released version was Windows 7 SP1
and that is all you get. You then need to download all the updates that
were released since SP1.

so an "in place" install could be done without having to go thru
100's of updates afterwards.

In that case people should be using latest Windows. As far as I know it
is Windows 10 version 1809. After you have installed this wonderful
Operating System, you then need to download and install the last
cumulative update that is available from Microsoft website. This will
bring your machine up to date at a particular date.

What is so special about Windows 7 updates? You just use whatever is
available and let the system download any updates for your system. If
you are so obsessed about security and updates then clearly you should
allow your machine to download automatic updates and install for you in
the background. You don't have to sit in front of a machine watching
your screen as new updates are downloaded in front of your eyes. It's
just plain stupid to do that.

That's called "slipstreaming" an ISO if you want to research it, but
it's more commonly used when clean-installing the same OS on multiple
PCs. For standalone users, image backups after major updates are a
better solution, since they include updates AND your settings.

Same here. We can do that for now, but I think our days are numbered. And
if it isn't the browser limitations, it will be something else, I'm afraid.
But at least I think I've heard that someone has come up with a patch to
prevent the constant forced updates.

MS can't even follow 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'; far worse, judging
by all the W10 updates that borking computers, it that MS can't manage my
preferred mantra: 'if you can't fix it, don't break it'. Of course, W10 was
broken from the start.
