USB Flash Drive Problem
 

64G USB3 Flash NTFS format. (Solid state Pen drive)

Works in Win 7 Pro.

But on Win XP Home SP3 laptop it says it wants to format it.
This laptop has only USB2 ports.

I rebooted but still wants to format.

How do I get this USB Flash drive to work on WIn XP Home?

Please give me the link if I need to download something.

AFAICR there were some changes to the NTFS file system between XP & W7,
so the safest thing to do would be to format it in the XP system rather
than the W7. However, I'm surprised that XP won't recognise one
formatted in W7, because I'd've thought the changes were to an extent
backward compatible, especially for reading, so maybe something else is
going on.

As far as XP itself goes, there should only be something in that if the
OP was using FAT32, but he's using NTFS, and even W98+ and W2k could
handle disks/partitions up to 128GB, and after the addition of a
registry setting that wasn't installed by default, W2k could match XP,
2003, & Vista in going up to 2TB. So with NTFS there really shouldn't
be a problem.

However, if it's a really old PC, I suppose there might be a BIOS
limitation, which might possibly be cured by a later firmware.

I have a number of 64Gb flashdrives. I use them in both Win7 and XP.
Never any issues if I insure I use "Safely Remove ...". Pretty sure I
initially formatted them using a Win7 pc.

So sorry. I must apologize.

I mixed up my flash drives.

The ones I was trying to work with were formatted exFAT and the laptop
did not have the exFAT drivers installed.

FORTUNATELY, I archived the exFAT installer on my NAS years ago so I
updated the laptop and the flash drive are now fully usable.
