If one of the keys is the L key, the period (.) is immediately below it. I
don't know the actual electronic code mappings for those two keys but it is
sounding more and more like a hardware issue...

keyboard to be the only one available unless it can be done in the
computer's bios and normally that can't be done as it is...

on the laptop has shorted or been damaged and that is what is causing your
issue. Simply plugging in a USB keyboard does...
