Thanks for the help, everyone - the Michaelstevenstech info looks like what
I need to switch over - my XP is retail version. Looks like I'm lucky that I

How do you disable a failed update?

No, I have SP2, but I think this was downloaded in response to some software
that I installed... BTW, what's the latest take on SP3? I avoided it at
release when I heard about the many difficulties...

911895)', every time I boot up, Windows attempts, and fails to install what

Can I get Explorer to open with a particular folder?

Is it possible to set up Windows Explorer so that it opens showing the
contents of my D drive (or any other folder) rather than the C drive?

Blackouts and other bad behavior

I used Spybot to look for adware. I did a system restore which seems to have
corrected the blackouts. But the system is just getting gradually slower and
slower - more time to open...
