No... the first real failure was the HD was just failing and I was able to
spot it and recover everything off it before it finally gave up.

Why do you say that?

You can copy all the files from one HD to another and it will work. I have
done it many times after having 3 HD fail on me and an upgrade process to a
larger HD.
