if it worked as you wanted in an older version then downgrade, you can get on sites as oldapps or portablesapps

Do Youtube downloaders still work with XP.

there are several ways, i keep all available if they change
firefox and chrome extensions: by addoncrop site, used to love ff completeyoutube dowload and yamp

Simple backup option non-techy person

I use 'freefile synch'
you select the folders (rather put in exceptions'
you can have mulilple paths eg email to one location/dir and work doc in anothr
you can set differnt targets eg differnt...

copy your
confsys.ini
autoexec.bat

edit them if at prompt (edit filename)
comment out/remove entries that are not necessary reboot .

Also check if you can select 'last known good startup???....'...

List mapped drives separately

You can see mapped drives, in the 'My Network Places'
if the shared folders have names 'xyz docs'

Taskbar & startup menu not working

You can start msconfig and other commands by using Task Manager
Ctl-Alt-Del
applications tab - 'new task'

Start up with 'safe mode', when you reboot when the logo appears there
is a key - f8, f12...

Windows shell disappears

When I log into windows, the shell/start menu does not display.

If I use task manager to open new task- c:\windows\explorer it appears
for a few seconds and closes, leaving no window management
