Standby and Backup Oddity

Probably unrelated, but some of our XP machines
turn on the screen (after it turns off from
inactivity) and keep it on for no reason. Not all
the XP machines, just a few. Dell laptops.

Modern Videos on XP?

A lot of new youtube videos won't play on XP with

I'm using external DVD drives anyway, when the
original one wears out in whatever failure mode
that usually is. Increasing error rates, failing
to launch.

It thinks there's activity. I've never been able to figure out why, on the perhaps
one in ten laptops the condition develops in. If it's a LED display, it won't
matter; but a flourescent light...

XP's "more.com" skips first lines of output -- a bigger problem

Slightly OT, but you get unix/linux under XP if
you install Cygwin, if you'd prefer a nicer shell.

/cygdrive/c gets you to windows drive c

I've run it since 2005 without problems.
