Thank you all for the help. I've run the malware applications you suggested and it appears to be fine. I probably will reinstall my Windows XP again in the near future.

Why do some directories become read-only?

Sounds like malicious codes. I had similar thing happened to me that my folders and files appear to be gone. Later I found them been changed to hidden and read-only.
