Default MS Excel and Word File Locking.

Hi Guys,
Very briefly, I have a Windows ME PC which I use as a central Document
server because it removes the 5 user limit when using XP Home and the 10
user limit with XP Pro.

My problem. *A user opens a word or excel file on the doc server and
makes what ever changes are required, however, if they suffer a power
failure, lose their network connection etc etc before they save the file
then the tmp file which Office 2003 creates is left on the system. *When
the user's connection is re-established and they open the same file, it
opens in READ-ONLY mode and this I believe happens because the tmp file
was not deleted. *It's impossible to delete the tmp files unless I
reboot the doc server.
I know only TWO ways to restore the normal operation again. *

1. Copy the file from the server to another PC, rename it, copy it back
and that works, however your now left with two files plus the **** tmp
file.

2. Reboot the Windows ME Document server and then delete the tmp files
and all is well.

Ther must be a way guys to resolve this other than the two I've
mentioned.

Anybody got any ideas.

Jerbear

It sad to say, but without using s Windows Server grade version, or a
Linux, there is no way of fixing this. Windows XP or ME were never
designed to be used as a server.
