The one and only reason for my looking at installing Win 7 is that it's
impossible to find
a new printer that works with anything older than XP. I have bought a
couple of "new"
ones from Craigs list that will run on Win 2000 and neither one lasted
longer than a week.

I'm disappointed I can't find a universal printer driver that will just
let me print.
Don't need to know how much ink is left or that paper is jammed. Just
send the signal to
the printer and print it out....

Not true. Many printers emulate the HP LaserJet II.
Additionally there is the PostScript Printer Software and associated PPD
files.
