Default No sound on Dell Dimension 9100 reinstall

Dear Experts,

Recently I bought a used Dell Dimension 9100.

As intended, I put in new bigger drives and
reinstalled XP Media center with the restore CD.

Installed a few drivers for sound and network.

When the network drivers were working, I did a
Windows update, and updated all the hardware drivers.
This included the sound drivers.

Windows Device Manager shows all the drivers working fine.

But I'm having serious issues with the sound.

If I plug my headphone or speakers into the jack
on the FRONT, I can hear the sound from Youtube.

On the BACK of the machine, there are two sets of
audio jacks. One set is for the sound card, which
also has a firewire.
The other set of colored audio jacks is the set of
jacks that are integrated into the mother board.

If I plug in the speakers anywhere in the BACK, I hear nothing.

When the machine boots, and the sound is turned on,
the Windows XP sound, plays for about a 1/2 second.
Then dies.

So there is sound from the front jacks.
But not from the rear jacks.

Does anyone know the problem, and solution?

What is it?

(Sorry to post to these forums. But Dell's own forums
registration and login systems are completely screwed up!!!
I've just spent over an hour trying to do it, and have
finally given up!!! I'd like to sue them for my wasted time.
First for the 9100 tech problem. And now for their website
which keeps putting me into infinite loops, gives no help,
and no way to reset your password. )

Thanks
