Default wifi adapter won't enable?

My friend has bought a new wifi adapter - I don't think it will be
any better than her present one, but never mind that for now. It's
an Edimax nano, basically a USB plug with a very little extra on
it.

I plugged it in, and when Windows for some reason couldn't load a
driver, I used the mini-CD, and after pointing the OS at the right
folder thereon, a driver loaded and seems to work.

Uninstall the device and unplug it from the usb port. You didn't say
whether or not the mini cd offered to install the driver. See if it
does, and, do so if it will. Reboot the computer for good measure and
plug the device back into the machine.

You may want to check with the manufacturer and see if a newer driver
is available directly from them which matches the make/model card you
have as well. But, try what I suggested above first to see if you can
get it up and going. Then try checking the web to see if a newer
version driver is available.

In summary: I _think_ the new wifi adapter has a driver the OS is
happy with, but it isn't seeing any networks, probably because it
can't be changed from Disabled, though a popup says "Enabling ...
Enabled".

While it's not set in stone, this sounds like a driver issue or
possibly a faulty card. Is the Wifi WEP (don't laugh, I still run
into some that are) or WPA/WPA2 configured? Some newer wifi cards
absolutely refuse to do anything with WEP. I've seen two that won't
pick them up at all, and one that does, but won't run it's higher
speeds until you switch over. That's why I'm asking.

Is the wifi 2.4ghz or 2.4ghz along with 5ghz? What are the
capabilities of the card?

Post back your results and we'll go from there.
