Thanks, but I've tried re-installing sr.inf. It proceeds so far and
is then unable to copy its required files even though they are on my
pc in windows\system32 and in windows\servicvepackfiles\i386. Looks
like something is seriously corrupt!

Every time I try to run system restore I get the message "System
restore Application has encountered a problem and needs to close
etc... " System Restore also fails to run in safe mode.

The Event Viewer shows the message:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: SRService
Event Category: None
Event ID: 107
Date: 28/11/2005
Time: 22:08:40
User: N/A
Computer: DESKTOP
Description:
The System Restore service has been suspended because there is not
enough disk space available on the drive
\\?\Volume{65581363-053a-11d7-bd5f-806d6172696f}\. System Restore
will automatically resume service once at least 200 MB of free disk
space is available on the system drive.
But I have 62 GB free on my system disk and 25 GB free on the other!

Also clicking the System Restore tab on My Computer/Properties
leads to another failure with "Run a DLL as an APP has encountered
a problem and neesds to close etc...
I'm running XPSP2.
Any help would be appreciated.

The 'standard' method of fixing System Restore (SR) problems a

1. Check only the C drive, or the drive on which the OS is
installed is being monitored by SR
2. Turn off SR, reboot then turn SR back on for the C drive (see1)
3. If " does not fix problem then go to Windows\inf and find
sr.inf. Right click sr.inf and select to reinstall. This will
reinstall SR.

If the above doesn't fix the problem and it may not then 'join the
club'! I have had the same problem for going on 12 months with no
solution other than reinstalling WINXP I suppose. In my opinion
System Restore simply is not worth using due to its flawed concept,
that is each Restore point is dependent upon the previous Restore
Point such that a fault will cause the loss of all Restore Points. I
suggest you look into using ERUNT (freeware)
