For some unexplained reason the background color of
selected text has turned to dark blue and makes the text
impossible to read once selected.

I've tried ways to lighten the color but so far none
work.

Can anyone suggest a fix?

For Windows, up to & including XP (later are similar but not the same)...

1. Go to Display properties (or rtclick desktop and select properties)

2. Go to "Appearance" tab

3. Click "Advanced"

4. Use the drop down box under "Item" to scroll down to "Selected Items"

5. Change to color to what you want

6. Apply/OK your way out.
