I still can't make a decision on this. I just went to the local
computer store and read the information on the little envelope that
contains some kind of business card with a code on it. It seems to me
that buying one of these will let me set my one computer up to do my
regular MS Office work on cloud nine or some such. That is, I won't
have a copy of the MS Office client software installed on my computer.
Did I misinterpret the information on the MS Office 2013 envelopes at
the store?

Here are the Office versions available.

Which box did you read ?

365 is subscription based, Office 2013 is not.
- Some 365 plans come with locally installed Office applications.
- All Office 2013 version install Office locally on your machine.

I guess I must have been reading the wrong box. I'll go back tomorrow
and have another look.

I would really like to find a box copy that would let me choose which
components it contains. I don't need anything other than Word, Excel
and Outlook, but all the available boxes include One Note, Access and
Publisher. I wish I could do a pick and choose, but I see no way to do
this. Gordon

Wysiwyg.

All of the following sold-at-retail versions install software locally

Office Home and Student 2013 ($140)
- Excel, Word, Powerpoint, & One Note
Office Home and Business 2013 ($220)
- Excel, Word, Powerpoint, One Note, & Outlook
Office Professional (400)
- Excel, Word, Powerpoint, One Note, Outlook, Publisher, & Access
Office 365 Home Premium ($100, Annual Subscription)
- Excel, Word, Powerpoint, One Note, Outlook, Publisher, & Access,
SkyDrive
Office 365 Small Business Premium ($150, Annual Subcription)
- Excel, Word, Powerpoint, One Note, Outlook, Publisher, & Access,
SkyDrive

If you wanted to purchase Word, Excel and Outlook as individual items
(locally installed) two options are available
- Word ($110), Excel ($110), Outlook ($110)
- Word ($80 non-commerical), Excel ($80, non-commerical), Outlook ($110)

If you wanted to purchase a suite and Outlook stand-alone then the
cheapest route would be:
- Office Home and Student ($140)+ Outlook ($110)

The subcription based versions as long as the subscription is maintained
and paid entitle the user to version upgrades free of charge in addition
to the ability to install on up to 5 pcs (including select mobile
devices) for the same single user.

If you plan on upgrading each and every time new versions are available
that included Outlook then the Office 365 Home Premium subscription plan
might be the cheapest since it's pretty certain MSFT will release the
next version before the cost surpasses the cheapest stand-alone suite
with Outlook (Office Home and Busines 2013).

What I'm struggling with is the need to go to a local store to look at
boxes - everything purchased requires a download and afaics the pricing
at the MSFT Store is the same (credit card required)....plus one has the
ability to Live Chat directly with MSFT and see all review all available
products.
