What I'm struggling with is the need to go to a local store to look at
boxes - everything purchased requires a download and afaics the
pricing at the MSFT Store is the same (credit card required)....plus
one has the ability to Live Chat directly with MSFT and see all review
all available products.

People seem physical media, because it implies:

1) Ownership of the product. A proof of purchase
in physical form. Many other kinds of proof, such as
email with key in it, cash register receipt, can get list.
A boxed copy with DVD, tends to get stored in the
bookshelf with the other software.

2) The implication of the ability to move the
installation to another computer box when the
time comes. Which the EULA might not actually permit,
or the EULA may have been changed after the product
was released.

With the stored selling "key card" copies, this is
yet another Microsoft way of introducing people to
the "Store" concept of getting their "Apps" only
through code downloads. Rather than from a disc.

But with a little effort, in this case at least,
you can still acquire a disc if you want it. You don't
have to download it over and over again.

I take it this delivery method, is also intended to
put a nail in the coffin of dialup users (big download).
Or perhaps, anyone on a metered Internet connection.
Some farmer on a satellite link with 2GB/month download
limit, isn't going to like this style of product delivery.

Call me old school...but if I'm buying something is a disc(s) and a case
to much to ask for? Even though I know how to burn a disc not everyone
does (more money spent on blank media too) and like you said the
downloads are big. Look how many people complained about the download
size of 8.1, and how many people wanted a disc so they wouldn't have to
download it again. Micro$soft is using the bull**** excuse that "most
laptops don't come with a disc drive anyway". Ah, no. That would be
*their* "2 an 1" (or whatever they are calling them).

With things like Netflix and iTunes it won't be long before you can't
buy/rent a DVD or CD or maybe even a Blu-ray. I've noticed that new
movie releases and now saying "available Tuesday on Blu-ray and Digital
HD". What happened to "available Tuesday on DVD and Blu-ray"? I'm
blaming the younger generation. A lot of them don't give a crap about
sound/music quality. All they care about is how much music they can cram
on to their iPod and/or smart phone. And on top of that why buy a CD
when you have torrents and places like MP3 Skull where you can download
those crappy sounding MP3s for free? Why buy or even rent a movie when
it can be had for free also via torrent/binaries? Who cares if the
picture and sound quality are lacking...it's FREE.

Yeah, it's early and I'm cranky...lol
