Headphones are stereo, Microphones are usually mono, putting a mono plug
in stereo socket can cause problems which prevent them making the
correct contact.

Well, that depends.
When plugging a stereo headphone into a mic input, the mic input line is
connected to one of the ear phones. So at least one is connected and
could work as a microphone. And with an impedance of 35 ohms, there is a
chance.
