Default XP Slowdown - 811493

I am running XP Home SP1 on my 1.7G Sony Vaio desktop. I've been
using MS's Auto Updates regularly including the installation of
811493, which brought my computer to a crawl.

I uninstalled the patch with the usual warnings of prog's which may
not work.
My computer is back up to speed with all the mentioned prog's working,
BUT...

There were several other newly created problems with the MS CD Wizard
copying newly 0'd length files to CD. The program just hung.

I discovered the thing about the 0'd length files when I used Sony's
version of their CD/Dvd creator which was polite enought to tell me
why not all of my files were going to be copied and gave me the option
of choosing what I'd like to do.

There were several other minor bugaboos which I've worked around, but
in response to Lucky's possible version problem, I have noticed that
up until 811493 my updated Windows version had been changing through
SP2.xxxxx and after uninstalling it reverted back to SP1.xxxxx.???

I too am puzzled and dissappointed with MS and am one of the newly
created "Slow to Update Windows" people.

I've also heard that temporarily disableing Norton anti-virus, and
then reinstalling the 811493 patch then re-installing NAV has worked
for many, but I'm afraid to quickly jump back in again until I've
heard more...

I have this patch installed but I don't have the slowdown problem.

I'm runnimg XP Pro (original)... could it be a problem only with XP SP1 or 2 ?
