Default simple home networking

I read that MS is going to ditch Homegroup networking so it's all going to
be via OneDrive. For years, we've had several devices networked just fine
with a Homegroup: PC's, TV's and other random experimets of mine. From
what I've read about OD, it's not clear that I can achieve that simple
sort of networking setup. I have zero interest in storing anything in the
MS cloud. Homegroup networking wasn't without problems, but it was simple
and adequate. Can OD be as simple?

This is what WORKGROUP sharing is for.

I can still manage to coax some configs to work. I'm still able
to talk to a WinXP machine (only possible via SMB1, not
SMB2 or SMB3).

If that were ever to fail, I have IIS FTP enabled on the
Win10 machine, and I have done an 80GB transfer to it
at full rate. Using a tick box, most of the time
it stays turned off. But if I'm running my old
Mac G4, that's how I can network to the rest of the
room. Regular sharing doesn't work, because the
code on the G4 is so old. The fastest I/O spigot
on the old Mac, is the GbE NIC, which is why
that's a preferred method. USB 1.1 just doesn't
cut it.
