Possibly USB3? I'm not sure whether those will work
in XP. But I haven't actually tried.

All my USB3.10 drives work under XP. Both in the USB3 ports
and the USB2 ports.

There's a very old program for testing USB flash drives:

https://www.softpedia.com/get/System.../H2testw.shtml

It writes a pattern to the whole drive and then reads it back.
I only use it on a brand new drive to see if it's defective. Probably
not worth the wear and tear using it again. Useful if you want to
change defective drives on warranty.
Flash drives do tend to stop working eventually though I have
a "winner" that's been going for over 12 years almost daily use.

Has a nice little program to examine your past and present USB
devices. Some items like power consumption are only available after
you plug a drive in.
