No, my e-mail throughput is not large, and I normally keep Thunderbird
open, so I normally will not notice this. And the poor connection
hindered me from testing a lot.

If not, there is the possibility that somehow Thunderbird got configured to
just grab a single message per check ...

Does Thunderbird has that setting?
