I don't think I've ever heard any laptop fan spin up. I've had 3
laptops. Still have two of them.

Oh, this old Toshiba (now apparently Dynamode!) definitely does; I
notice it when I do video conversion, for example. And sometimes I hear
it whirr up unexpectedly, and look in Task Manager, and there's always a
peak in CPU usage, so I look to see what's causing it.

I've definitely heard the Optiplex speed up. I wondered a bit if it's
fan was even turning until I heard it speed up.

If that's the desktop, yes, it definitely varies; my friend's one (small
form factor, but I expect all sizes) comes on full at power-on, then
drops after a few seconds. (Which sounds a fail-safe way to do it.)

lot, of hundreds of places. Sherlock Holmes "said" that after a
certain point your brain gets full and when you learn new things you
have to push out old things. So at least I'm not senile, afaic.

He seemed to imply that he could choose what to discard, though!

If you're going by what I said, I misphrased it. I never read it
myself anyhow, and it came out different the last time I said what he
said. But I thought you didn't get to choose what to discard.

I did, and I thought he implied he did decide - but it's fortysomething
or fiftysomething since I devoured the books, so I might be wrong!
