I can't get into a W8.1 laptop as owner cannot recall password.
Microsoft no help as he cannot supply enough information to them. (last
emails etc) Is there a simple way round this, or a freeware program to
download to another computer. Laptop does not have any reset discs or CD
drive.

While I can not help you with the password recovery problem, I can tell
you what I did to prevent the loss of the password.

First I am the principal user of the computer and my wife occasionally
uses it. Using a Notepad I created a documents with my name, address,
etc, and my password.

I then did a screen print, and cropped the image to just above
information. I then saved it as a jpg.

In PC Settings, Accounts I changed the picture on the opening page to
the above JPG. Now the first screen that shows when the password is
requested is my contact information and the password to access the
computer. This is also my Microsoft account password, which I never use
and if it were not there would be forgotten.

This obviously would not work if a person were a security fanatic, or
the computer was used with multiple accounts.

So why have a password at all?

Because I had to create one when I installed Windows 8.1
