This is a fully activated legit installation where, for weeks, the Windows
update button in the printer settings has been coming up with this error:

Windows was unable to get a list of devices from Windows Update.
Please try again later.

an 'installation' which you intentionally hacked to block the windows
auto-update mechanism, a detail you conveniently neglected to mention.

in other words, you broke it.
