Even for those mobo that doesn't require dimms in pairs, is there a BIOS
setting that might have an influence on this?
(in other words, is it possible that with a wrong BIOS setting on some
motherboards, dimms will not be accepted if they are not in pair?)

Not entirely true. There are various semi-obscure computers that
require dimms in pairs, or even quads. The least obscure example is
Rambus.
