In your testing, what part of it didn't work ?

You should have your installer DVD handy, in case
you need to boot up and do a restore over top of C: .

The storage format is VHDX, for images.

For the file-by-file backup option, they segment
the backup into 200MB ZIP files or so.

Using this stuff is an "acquired taste". There are some
users who swear "the utility has to be made by Microsoft
before I will trust it", and this mechanism ensures those
people can do backups. Whereas otherwise, they'd have to
break their oath to do so.

Yes, it works ok. I've restored with such images several times.
Here's an Explorer view of the latest.
Notice the 120GB file;

The drawback is the time it takes, when compared to third-party imaging
programs which are just as reliable in my experience.
