Default jvc everio modelgz-hd300bu

I bought this new hi-def hdd video camera and can't get it to work with my
computer. the software that comes with it,everio media browser does not load
when I plug in the camera to the usb port. However when I unplug the camera
the software pops up. If I plug the camera back in the software crashes.
I have tried uninstalling the mediabrowser software to see if my computer
would recognize the camera as a hdd and it is not recognized. I just get the
hourglass thing until I unplug the camera. Have tried using it with windows
movie maker and Sony vegas editing software and nothing works. The camera
doesn't seem to have a firewire port, just usb. My computer is a few years
old hp slimline pavilion with amd 64 chip, 1.8ghz.
I also tried to plug the camera into a new laptop at a store and had the
same problem of the camera not being recognized by the computer. Seems
strange that a usb camera wouldn't be recognized.
Anyone else have one of these cameras and having problems? I really like
the camera but it is very frustrating not being able to get the files off it
and into my computer. Help.
