Default computer gets "one of the usb devices has malfunctioned and window

I'm getting the same error now. This has popped up only recently. It is for
an mp3 player that has worked fine as a USB removable device. Now I get this
error when connecting to my workstation and laptop. All has worked fine
previously (this summer). I'm not sure what Windows patch broke this but it
is failing on more than just my machines. All the hareware manager shows the
device as now is "unknown" and of course the bubble that comes up in the
system tray telling me one of the devices has malfunctioned.

Even the manufacture's software that I had running on my system doesn't see
the device now (no surprise as windows is not interacting with it first).

I've checked different computers, different ports, tried replacing a driver
(can't do that as the device is unknown). I've consulted a couple different
forum groups and searched MS's site. Unfortunately everything tries to pull
me to Vista and I'm using XP SP3. The common thing between my workstation
and laptop is that they are both running XP (but different service packs - 2
vs. 3) so I'm ruling out hardware at this point. My player continues to run
and works fine as an "island" but I can no longer connect to it.

Maybe I should just "undo" Windows. Hmmmm.
