Default Files and folders disappear

Thank you Steve:

I have run full AV & MW scans of the system and drives, however, from a
different supplier, IMSI/System Suite 9. The results were 3 files
quarintined and deleted. No malware detected. I will go to the MS site and
run the scans using the MS software.

In an attempt to resolve the problem, I deleted the drive, reformated NTFS
and then loaded the backup of the drive. This backup was made prior to the
occurance of this problem. The result is that the files are visible, in
almost all instances, but when I try to open them with Excel or Word 2003,
now I am getting an error message that the files are locked. When I go to
the files to examine them the attributes are "read only". I can access the
attributes and change them but the error message said that to correct the
problem I should examine the permissions on the files and folders.

Have not gotten to that, as yet, but it certainly sounds, to me anyway, that
something nefarious is going on.

If you have any further advice I would appreciate the direction.

Following a system crash all of the files on a particular hard drive have
disappeared in Explorer. However, the folder structure remains visible.

I have been able to make the files visible using the Folders and Files
Attribute settings but each time I exit Explorer the attribute switches back
to Hidden. This occurs even if I have set the system to show hidden system
files.

I would like to set all of the files and folders on the system back to the
default settings.

Have slowly driven myself insane with this problem over the course of the
last month.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Some malware programs turn off the settings that show hidden and
system files to make their files hard to detect. Run full scans with
your antivirus and antispyware programs. I'd also download and run
the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and MalwareBytes'
Anti-Malwa
