You won't see any pop-ups after you check this option.

As for the interface well the older one did
not have things like "grimefighter" and "software updater" etc. Once
again I say that it was my fault for allowing it but.... I think it is
the dumbing down of programs that I dislike.


You can still remove all those unwanted Tools.

Control Panel Programs and Features avast! Free Antivirus
Uninstall/Change Change

Uncheck all Tools (and Mail Shield).
