Mostly they don't. There's a button in the bottom-left corner of the
screen, right where you'd expect the start button to be. Click that,
and you get a recognizable desktop screen.

There's still no Start button, the button in the lower-left just takes
you back to the Metro screen. That can be remedied with a $5 piece of
software called Start8.

After that, you'll recognize what's going on.
