Default XP Pro FAX

Thank you, Rob. I'm as sorry about the long thread as
you are. But the problem and suggested attacks on it
just keep advancing and lengthening.

I launched C:\windows\system32\Fxsclnt.exe /new
and it did indeed give me a Fax Console. Want me to make
a shortcut out of it and go on from there, so I can
start up that way? I'm game, but then what?

Bill,

Instead of lauching the shortcut, can you find the executable and
directly launch it?

On my machine (from Start Menu)
Fax Console: %SystemRoot%\System32\FxsClnt.exe /new
Send a Fax: %SystemRoot%\System32\FxsSend.exe
Fax Coverpage Editor: %SystemRoot%\System32\FxsCover.exe

Maybe you've already done this ... the thread is so long I can't make
heads or tails of it anymore. Sorry.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

So now I've tried just about everything (except the "install" that I
don't see), and so I think it's time to try Uninstall and Install
again (or do you have some further ideas?). But The Add/Remove
doesn't
remove everything, unless what I did WAS the "remove" and all I have
to do is start Add/Remove again. What's your thinking?

Add/Remove sounds good to me. Also... it's not supposed to be
necessary
with XP but I think that a good old fashioned restart after
installing a
component (especially one that interacts with hardware) can be a
worthwhile
effort.

Nope, no different. I've shut down and booted up. Three times.
I've re-installed, from Add/Remove etcetera in the approved way,
3 times, always clean now with no halts or error windows. It
apparently now has access to all the files it needs. Yet the
(empty) next to FAX, where some Console should come up,
remains. I can't install, and I can't uninstall. If you have no
further advice, I guess I either have to drop it again, or
refer it to the Mictosoft Online Tech Support. What do you
think?

Bill, big stretch here but want to make sure we've covered all bases.
Look
in your start menu again. The fax console should show up in Start
Programs Accessories Communications. (Earlier you said you were seeing
fax right under Programs and that is not where XP puts its fax console.)

************************************************** ************************

Maybe I didn't make it clear enough. StartAll
ProgramsAccessoriesCommunications leads me to a drop down menu with
six choices. (I don't recall saying Fax under Programs). Fax,
HyperTerminal, Network, etcetera. Pointing at FAX or clicking on
it gives nothing. Pointing at Fax, it reads "Fax(empty)". No console.
This tells me the installation isn't complete, which may be why it
also will not UNinstall.

Has a fax printer appeared in your Printer and Fax folder yet? If no,
display the task pane in that window and use the "setup fax" option.
If not
available, try adding a printer. Tell XP you will select the printer and
select Fax Printer.

************************************************** ********************
In that folder I have 4 icons...Add Printer, Fax via eFax (0 ready),
HotFax (0 ready), Lexmark (0 ready and checked as the live one), and I
don't know what you mean by 'a fax printer', or how to display the
task pane, or a 'setup fax' option. I clicked on Add a printer, and
didn't see an option where I could select anything.

Am assuming that you have all services at their default settings. If you
have disabled any of these, go back and enable them.

I have to make that same assumption, because I don't know where to go
back to, to check them and enable them.

What about drivers for your fax/modem? Have you checked the
manufacturer's
site for updates? *Is* the modem recognized as a fax modem in Device
Manager?

Gosh, I've been composing and sending FAXes via SmithMicro HotFax on
every Windows for years, including this XP which came with S3 modem
and its drivers. Device Manager must know it's there and alive and well.

HOW TO: Troubleshoot Common Fax Problems in Microsoft Windows XP

An FAQ with some mention/discussion of installation problems:
http://faq.outlookmvps.org/archives/..._services.html

Okay, Sharon, I will read those links and print them out, but
I think a basic problem is indicated by the fact that I can't
uninstall whatever XP Fax is there now, so that I can start over.
Add/Remove Programs has always been a little ambiguous about that,
as I've used it. Right now, I feel it's stuck in limbo, halfway
between the Pearly Gates and the River Styx, and I can't nudge it
in either direction.
