Default Windows 10 is bloated

I had one software app that wouldn't run on xp so decided to get windows
10 since it's the newest version of Windows, as far as I know.
It hogged most of a 40 gig hard drive and it turned out the software I
needed to run wouldn't run on it either. At least it was given to me by
a disgruntled windows user, so it didn't cost anything.

Linux is what I run most of the time and it does more things better than
windows 10 and uses less space.

Windows is also a money hog, just trying to get your money, whichever
way it can.

It was interesting to see how it's changed, and also how it's not much
different than win xp. I can't see anything special about it.

Linux can do everything windows can do.
Well that's my gripe about windows.

If it wasn't for specific software that needs windows I'd never use it.

Let's see. (Checks wallet)

I paid over $300 for my one and only copy of Win2K.
I paid $150 for a single copy of Windows 7.
I paid $39.95 each for two copies of Windows 8.
It's getting cheaper.
I paid nothing for the activated Windows 10 I have here.

I see a hogging pattern there.

The "images" for each OS are relatively consistent. They're
in the 10-12GB range. How do you make it that small ?

powercfg /h off # turn off hibernation, eliminate hiberfil.sys

Using System control panel, set pagefile to a fixed size. I
use 1GB as a ceremonial size, but you can dial that to around
300MB if you want. There could be up to 300MB of "write-once"
materials during boot.

Now, after a reboot, check the size of C: and maybe there's
12GB of stuff (before you install any programs). The OS size,
once you've done that, is relatively consistent from Win7/Win8/Win10.
WinXP was an entirely different animal (since it doesn't use
the same software maintenance folder structure).

Does TurboTax run in Linux ? OK then. And tax season
in my country starts soon (when slips arrive to start
the tax calculation process).

Any Windows software with snuffy licensing
mechanisms, isn't going to survive WINE. And at least
one clever dude, has written an installer that "detects
everything". His installer refuses to install in virtual
OSes (Guests) as well as WINE. He has detectors for both.
So his software won't be running on your machine, even if
he has a "demo" mode. The installer won't allow it.

And then we can talk about RAM. Windows 10 can run in
350MB. Does Linux run in 350MB in all 500 cases ? No.
Windows 10 has a "1GB spec" for RAM, but the actual
kernel will run in 250-350MB. Not really that much
larger than the resting size of WinXP (maybe about
double what WinXP managed on a good day). If I set
a Win10 VM to 250MB, I can *still* open a copy of
Notepad! Firefox, not so much.

Is it a well designed OS, Windows 10?

Actually, no, but it would take another post to explain why.
I've had Windows 10 freeze up a number of times, and it
doesn't handle corner cases all that well. Task Manager
sucks, as it's a regular application with no superpowers.
