Why an extra step to install x86?

Wouldn't the ms mediacreater prompts for either CD or usb media?
Just try the usb install 1st if it doesn't work use the Cd; I think
there will be a prompt for either clean/fresh install or "update".

It's been a long ago....but the version of usb is not the problem.
