There are many ways to tickle your problems ...

You can rule out hardware issue by booting up your PC with
a bootable Knoppix CD, and check if your mouse/keyboard
work.

Once you rule out hardware issue, the easiest way to
resolve your XP problem is by restoring your OS from
a backup (assume you have had regular backups).

If you don't have regular backup, see if you have a
set of restore CD/DVD that came with your Acer.

My Acer Aspire One has a restore option that enables
me to restore the OS from day one. But this means that
I would lose everything since day one. That is why I
prefer to use my regular backups for bypassing problems.

If you like troubleshooting, boot up your PC with a bootable
utilty "UBCD4Win", and run anti-Virus scans and other
diagnostics.

Good luck.
