All of that begs the question of what you mean by "got 55 updates". They
were offered to you? You chose to download them? You chose to install them?
You chose to reboot? If you're in the middle of a production issue, don't
choose to do any of those things until things calm down.

I had Windows Update set to notification only - i.e just tell me about
updates and don't even download them.

I chose nothing. Just rebooted for reasons I cannot recall. Was not
working a production problem at the time, but I find reboots to be
fairly common in times of trouble... missing connections, security
issues... call the Help Desk and like-as-not the first thing they'll
tell me is "Try a reboot".
