greets!
there are a couple of issues, made worse by the fact I'm trying to
help
someone in Europe (I'm in US) plus I only have Windows 10 here.
she cannot get connected to the wifi where she is staying, a
relative's
place. we have found that the laptop does connect to other friends' wireless!

Does the relative's router (wifi box, but probably referred to as a
router, even if that's strictly incorrect) have an "add" or similar
button? Many do these days, and when pressed, devices that know about
the procedure can connect within the next few minutes. That would be
simplest - assuming she has W7 and that W7 knows about this procedure.

(a) I tried to guide her to 'manage wireless networks' with the idea
of forcing
Windows to "forget" the problem connection. it wasn't present under
"network and sharing center"! what could cause this?
(b) we found it in the 'connections' tab on the right bottom slide.
I am not
sure we have succeeded, however, in getting Windows to 'forget' the profile
as we ran out of time. is this the right strategy to pursue? how to
tell if it
has been 'forgotten'?
(c) I am considering asking her to venture to the command line and
run
'sfc /scannow; plausible strategy?
or what would you suggest? grateful for any help. I am searching
around;
see some ideas but so far at a loss.

From what I gather, she can see available wireless networks in the
Internet Access icon in the systray. Others are visible, but not the

No, reading (b) above suggests to me that it _is_ included in that list.

one she wants. Either that or the one she wants is visible but doesn't
work. With the latter we need the error message.
When you place your mouse over a wireless icon and wait a second a
balloon appears with info about it.

This is the starting point, and the best one.
If the above is true, let us know, and we'll guide you from there.

Without that, we could make all kinds of guesses and suggestions (which
people here will readily do), but they'd probably cause you more
confusion than helpful guidance.

Yes. I was going to do as under XP, where I found a list of wifis that
the computer knows about (where you could delete one, and/or change
whether it was connected automatically when seen, and other things), but
I can't find it in 7.

BTW, "sfc /scannow" would do no harm, and it's a marvellous thing to
run now and again. Many customers love it, even as a placebo.
