it's a pretty poor placebo that doesn't alleviate symptoms.

If the menu item was present.

yeah, I know.

sigh.

If it's not present, they mention that command line is an option.

https://kb.netgear.com/29889/How-to-...-in-Windows-10

administrator command prompt...

netsh wlan show profiles

netsh wlan delete profile name="[PROFILE NAME]"

But that's not going to help, if you cannot get the software to allow
you to open a new connection later.

the netsh command is worth a try. I am betting that, if this works,
a re-boot may allow a fresh connection.

Storage for the profiles could be near this area.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\
Profiles Signatures\Unmanaged

not something I would try to get her to do! she doesn't know the simplest
command-line commands.

a somewhat technically knowledgeable friend will visit on Friday. there's a
chance he is up to this.

And there are also tricks for recovering passwords.

I don't think this is an issue.

This shows you can export profiles.

https://superuser.com/questions/4246...e-in-windows-7

netsh wlan export profile interface=* key=clear folder=c:\

I didn't want to post too much stuff, as I don't want to encourage
someone to break things worse than they're already broken. And to get
someone remote like that to do a backup first, before messing around, is
also too hard to do.

master of the *science* of understatement!

You could also do steps such as checking Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) to
see if the Wifi driver is OK (no yellow marks), and also verify that the
Wifi is not in Airplane mode.

the laptop is not in airplane mode. it sees networks and it works at
other people's places; she visited two acquaintances in different cities and
connected fine.

it is just at this one spot, where unfortunately she is semi-permanently
housed, that it doesn't work. I'm banking on our technically inclined friend
who will visit on Friday.

he said he's had similar issues (as I think I have too) and 'forgetting'
the connection worked. I am not convinced we succeeded in getting the
connection 'forgotten' butI cannot press her patience more.

some people burrow into problems like this. others you can get to look
for a bit, then eyes glaze over or worse.

My laptop has a function key you can
press,
to turn off the Wifi Radio output. You want to make sure all of that
looks good. It should be OK, but that's about all the hardware-related
issues I can think of.
