I think the OP meant that a bootable thumb drive would contain or invoke
the rescue system: the data is there on the external drive. There is
almost certainly a way of doing this with linux but whether it's
available off the shelf or not I know not. (And I don't mean that the
whole computer needs to run linux, just the thumb-drive.)
